Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules

Beauty rules at Bobbi Brown, with a new limited-edition Beauty Rules Palette ($45) and Beauty Rules ($24.95), Bobbi's sixth book - this one an updated, fresh, energetic beauty bible for young women. When I first saw the new book at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, my lovable Bobbi Brown reps said, "Beauty Rules was not written for you. Think teens and twenties."

Emphasizing natural beauty in the book, Bobbi shares the best tips and tools for fresh, healthy skin and beautiful hair, makeup, and nails. Bobbi Brown's goal is to help women - all women - look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident. True to this philosophy, Beauty Rules was written to help young women learn the beauty basics, then get creative and experiment with their look, and ultimately find their own style.

The book isn't just about makeup. Beauty Rules covers everything from good eating habits to self-esteem. Bobbi used "real girls," not professional models for the photo shoots, just like she did in her Pretty Powerful campaign. She wanted to teach young women to appreciate their own unique beauty.

Fortunately for us women of a certain age, despite the fact that the Beauty Rules Palette is geared toward teenage beauty, it's perfect for women of all ages! The palette's box is designed like a school notebook, with lines for the owner's name - cute. What's inside the notebook palette are some fabulous everyday colors.

  • Ivory Eye Shadow
  • Lightning Sparkle Eye Shadow
  • Orchid Sparkle Eye Shadow
  • Eclipse Eye Shadow
  • Baby Pink Pot Rouge
  • Homecoming Pink Pot Rouge
  • Air Kiss Lip Gloss
  • Rum Lip Gloss
  • Crystal Gold Glitter Lip Balm
  • Jet Creamy Eye Pencil

  • Most of these shades are new, which meant I had to have the palette!

Even though it was "fixin' to rain" (I chuckle every time my West Virginia friends use that expression), I was able to get some half-way decent photos of the palette colors on my arm. Naturally, I couldn't photograph the Ivory Eye Shadow. I didn't even try. It's the perfect base shade for your eye look if your skin is fair, and a great highlighting color if your skin is dark. Many of the other shades are sheer and natural. You will barely see some of them on my arm photos.

In the photo at left, top to bottom, are Lightning Sparkle Eye Shadow, a very sheer and shimmering shadow that's barely visible under my wrist; Orchid Sparkle Eye Shadow, also sheer, but with a little more pigment; Eclipse Eye Shadow for your smoky eye; and Jet Creamy Eye Pencil.

In the photo at right are the two pot rouge shades for lips and eyes. Both are pink; the only difference is that one is warmer than the other. I will enjoy both.

The photo below left shows the three lip colors. From top to bottom, Air Kiss Lip Gloss, Rum Lip Gloss, and the sheer Crystal Gold Glitter Lip Balm. Gorgeous!

This palette is perfect for your daughter, but it will also be perfect for women of any age who want sheer, natural colors with touches of shimmer or pizazz. I think I'm going to enjoy it! All the shades work together, and they can be applied with the fingers (teen beauty is supposed to be simple!).

Beauty Rules - the book and the palette, is available at Nordstorm, Neiman Marcus, and, I'm sure, all the Bobbi Brown counters. The Bobbi Brown counters are ready to show young women how to use the palette for a look that they will love: gloss, sparkle, and clean colors!

Bobbi Brown Tips from the Master Class at Nordstrom Tysons Corner Center

What fun we had yesterday at the Bobbi Brown Master Class at Nordstrom at Tysons Corner! About 21 of us spent almost three hours with Tia Hebron, Bobbi's Global Makeup Team Artist and Education Executive (and total dynamo); Michele Shakeshaft, Bobbi's fabulous Market Coordinator for our region; and 10 makeup artists whose sole mission was to make us look beautiful - and learn how to do it ourselves.

I have three pages of notes! They covered a lot of ground, and I can't give you the whole class in one blog feature. I can tell you about the tips I found most helpful and the products Tia used on me. I also have a few photos, despite the challenge of the lighting in the room (with flash, they washed out; without, they were a bit dark). Unfortunately, my photo of Tia and Michele is dark. There's another photo of Tia below.

Tia led us from skin care to the finishing touches - with humor, talent, and energy. Somehow, "the blogger" got tapped to be the model, so I sat under the lights on the little stage as Michele and Tia demonstrated what they taught us. From my vantage point, I watched each woman in the class as she was transformed from pretty to pretty powerful. It was a blast!

We learned all about Bobbi's skin care, starting by cleansing our faces, and we got a nice introduction to the newest Hydrating Skincare products. Tia called Hydrating Face Tonic "Gatorade for the skin," a great description for the toner/tonic that is loaded with minerals and vitamins to enhance your skin before you use the treatment products best for you.

Tia focused on two great serum choices for use under our moisturizer: Intensive Skin Supplement (my choice for my aging and dry skin) and Brightening Intensive Serum, a serum that won't bleach your skin as it clarifies and brightens. We applied our serum and followed up with a moisturizer. Michele selected the new Hydrating Face Cream for me. We learned that all of Bobbi Brown's moisturizers have built-in primers so that your face will be ready for your makeup application after you moisturize.

Because your makeup can't look its best without good skin underneath, we continued to apply our skin care, using products to protect our eyes and lips. Extra Eye Repair Cream is the staff favorite in Bobbi's New York headquarters. Tia called it "Spanx in a jar," and apparently they can't keep it in stock in the closet. We also learned that Bobbi's Lip Balm SPF 25, which feels great on my always-parched lips, will bring out the color in your lips.

Tia used the phrase "runway to reality" to describe how Bobbi Brown translates runway color trends into makeup we can use every day. She started with foundation, as the artists applied three shades to our faces to see which one would disappear into our skin. You want your foundation to look natural, so selecting the right foundation shade and applying it correctly will get you off to the right start. She also mentioned that you should only apply foundation to the areas of your face that need it. That's often in the center of your face, and you should blend it out to "nothing" where your skin is clear and even. She also taught us how to use Bobbi's top-rated Corrector to take away any darkness under our eyes follow with the Creamy Concealer Kit, making sure to use concealer in the inner corner near the nose and set the concealer with powder.

Everyone needs to use bronzer! I didn't believe that until I saw the transformation of 21 women who lightly applied either the Bronzing Powder or the All Over Bronzing Gel SPF 15.

Tia used Desert Sun gel on me (and the lovely lady to the left), and I loved the warm look. None of looked tan; we just looked sculpted and healthy!

Bobbi recommends an order to makeup application: cheeks, lips, then eyes. If you run out of time during your makeup application, you can quit after any step. Your cheeks and lips will add radiance to your face. Tia was a hoot when she told us that people are nicer to you when you're wearing blusher. She suggested that if you apply the bronzer first, you simply need to add a pop of color to the apple of your cheeks to be ready to roll. With Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, powder blushes, and Sheer Color Cheek Tint, Bobbi has us covered with formulas and shades! Tia surprised me when she selected Sheer Coral Sheer Color Cheek Tint for me. That may be the only shade I haven't bought! Naturally, Tia showed everyone techniques for applying color, and she recommended Bobbi's brushes - the right brush for each task - as we progressed through the class.

We moved from cheeks to lips. You probably know that Bobbi Brown recommends using your lip color before your lip liner. When you do use your pencil liner, use the flat edge of the pencil and feather it on to define and enhance your lips. Tia used Black Cherry Creamy Lip Color and Black Chocolate Sheer Color Gloss on my lips. She used Brownie Lip Liner to finish the look. (You can see my selections from the Black Velvet Collection (last week's shopping foray) at this link. Glad I bought Black Cherry and Black Chocolate!)

We did our eyes last! Naturally, I wanted to play with the new Black Velvet Collection, so Tia applied a neutral ivory color all over my lid before she started her magic. She used Khaki Eye Shadow on my lower lid before she applied the new Black Charcoal Metallic Eye Shadow. She told us that there has been a shift in how to create the smoky eye. No longer do you paint one color on your lower lid and another in the crease. Now, the best way is to apply the darkest color at the last line and blend as you move up into the crease. Don't be afraid to use your finger to help blend if you need to. Tia blended the Black Charcoal over the Khaki and followed with the new Kohl Eye Liner in Black and Extreme Party Mascara. She also used gray shadow to fill in my brows and the Highlighter Pen in Opal at the top of my cheekbones.

Here I am modeling the look Tia created with Bobbi's new book, Beauty Rules. There's a Beauty Rules Palette too! I'll tell you about Beauty Rules later this week. I took a closeup photo of the eye look Tia created when I got home. I had to take the photo inside using a flash, so it's very shiny - sorry about that. I should have left it on for the party I attended last night! It was pretty snazzy.

If you get a chance to attend a Bobbi Brown Master Class, you should do it! You'll learn a lot and have fun while you're learning. My thanks for Tia, Michele, the 10 artists, the sweet gals who let me take their photos (including that gorgeous mother-daughter team above), and Diron Carr, the Nordstrom Tysons Bobbi Brown manager who told me I had to attend. He was right.

Bobbi Brown's Eye Couture Palette - Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman Exclusive

Like jewel tones? Like Bobbi Brown makeup brushes? Check out this incredible Bobbi Brown Eye Couture Palette ($220), a Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman exclusive expected to arrive in stores any day.

I realize it's starting to seem like Bobbi Brown week here at Best Things in Beauty (or Chantecaille week), but there has been so much news to share. I've even held back the Bobbi Brown holiday collection photos. I couldn't hold this news back. I predict that this limited-edition collection is going to sell out, and I want my readers to have first dibs. Get on a waiting list! I'll share contact information with you below.

First, though, I'll describe this palette. Just look at the jewel-toned shades at left in this scanned photo. Deep and luxurious, most of them telegraph fall and winter. You don't just get beautiful eye shadows with the palette; you also get four brushes in a carrying case!

Here is a list of the eye shadow shades.
    • Star Sparkle Eye Shadow
    • Diamond Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow
    • Peacock Metallic Eye Shadow
    • Onyx Sparkle Eye Shadow
    • Amethyst Metallic Eye Shadow
    • Emerald Sparkle Eye Shadow
    • Bonfire Metallic Eye Shadow
    • Topaz Metallic Eye Shadow
    • Bash Metallic Eye Shadow
    • Volcano Sparkle Eye Shadow
    • Lapis Sparkle Eye Shadow
    • Garnet Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow
When you think Bobbi Brown, you usually think neutrals, right? Bobbi has always had some darker, punchier shades, but this fall, she has added "wearable dramatic" to her counter repertoire, and I am thrilled by the variety.

As if the eye palette weren't enough, it comes with a brush set in a case that includes these brushes - all travel-sized.
    • Eye Sweep Brush
    • Angle Eye Shadow Brush
    • Eye Contour Brush
    • Eye Liner Brush
Bobbi Brown's makeup brushes are all top quality, so the addition of the brush set is so practical.

If you have a Neiman Marcus or Bergdorf Goodman near you - and you want this set - I'd suggest you get on the waiting list. If you don't have a store nearby, but would like to order the Eye Couture Collection, you can give Rachel Lagman, Bobbi Brown Product Specialist, at Neiman Marcus a call at (202) 966-9700, ext 2265. She will take good care of you.

Sometimes, Bobbi's collections that are exclusive to department stores eventually land on Bobbi's own Web site. This one may too - I don't know. I'm not taking that chance. I'm on the list!

Bobbi Brown Black Velvet Collection - My Selections Swatched

Only 10 days ago, I gave you a preview of Bobbi Brown's new Black Velvet Collection for Fall and Winter 2010. Ladies, it's in the stores, and it's fabulous!

Today, I shopped at lunch with the beautiful Rachel Lagman, Bobbi Brown Product Specialist, at Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie. She helped me select the best shades for my pale skin and blond hair. When I got home, I learned that Nordstrom Tysons Corner also has the collection. That means it's at a store near you. Bobbi has covered all the angles with this collection - there are shades (and looks) for every skin tone and every preference, from everyday color to nighttime drama.

There were two Metallic Lip Colors ($22) on display: Black Garnet and Black Maple. I selected Black Garnet, which is shown at the top of my arm photo to the right. Black Maple is very brown and better suited, I think, to someone with darker skin. There were also two Creamy Lip Colors ($22). My choice between Black Mahogany and Black Cherry was Black Cherry. Black Cherry is shown in the middle of my photo. Then there is a drop-dead gorgeous Sheer Color Gloss ($20) in Black Chocolate that is surprisingly sheer and light on my skin. It looks darker in the tube. I love it! Just "take in" this photo. All three lip colors are gorgeous!

Neiman Marcus did not have all of the new eye shadows in stock yet, but they did have one that caught my eye instantly: Black Cocoa Metallic Eye Shadow ($20). Don't let the name fool you. It's brown - a beautiful brown (and shown at left under clouds and below in sun). To go with it, I selected the brown-toned new Kohl Eye Liner ($20) in Black Chocolate. The Kohl Eye Liner is also available in Black Plum (a dark plum, so trendy for fall and modeled by Rachel today) and Black.

There were three shadows I didn't see today. I'm hoping they will be available at Nordstrom this weekend. I'm going to a Bobbi Brown Master Class at Tysons Corner Center (you can too!), led by Tia Hebron, Bobbi's Global Makeup Team Artist and Education Executive. I suspect I'll purchase more from this extraordinary collection - and possibly hoard Black Garnet Metallic Lip Color.

    What do you think?

P.S. I bought one of the new Hydrating Skincare items too. I'll tell you about it later.

Update 8/21: Tea Hebron from Bobbi Brown did my eyes today with the new Black Velvet colors. I'll show you tomorrow. She made me "dramatic"! Very cool.

Bobbi Brown Downtown Beauty Color Collection

There's a very special Bobbi Brown Color Collection available at QVC. The Downtown Beauty Collection ($92.76) is a six-piece set that can be used to create a fresh daytime face or bold smokey eyes perfect for a night out. This collection will take you from day to night with ease.

The Downtown Beauty Collection was inspired by the chic women I see walking around SoHo every day. Whether they are meeting a friend for lunch, headed to the office, or going out at night, they always look polished and put together. - Bobbi Brown

I bought Downtown Beauty during a "Today's Special Value" offer at QVC. I thought it might disappear (sell out), so I didn't tell you about it then. Amazingly, the collection is still available at QVC. If I were you, I would check out this great value set.

You might remember that I had my doubts about the lilac shades in the eye palette (see link); I was afraid they would be too red on my eyes. They work perfectly because they contain heavy amounts of gray and brown! See the swatches below.

Here's what's in the boxed set.
    • 0.25 oz five-well eye shadow palette with mirror containing Ivory, a creamy white; metallic Heather Lilac, a gray violet with pearl flecks; Bronze Shimmer Wash, a bronzed brown; Heather, a medium gray violet; and Black Plum, a dark brown plum
    • 0.15 oz five-well lip palette with mirror containing lip sheer in Peony, a bright pink; creamy lip color in Bronzed Pink, a shimmering bronze/pink; lip color in Brown, a medium pink brown; creamy lip color in Pink Sequence, a silvery pink; metallic lip color in Ruby, a soft ruby pearl
    • 0.1 oz jar of Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Caviar, a deep black brown
    • 0.14 fl oz vial of sheer lip gloss in Popsicle, a gorgeous light pink
    • 0.14 oz compact of blush in Washed Rose Shimmer, a warm rose
    • Dual-ended eye shadow brush
    • Ultra fine eyeliner mini brush with cap
    • Lip brush
    • Tip card with the looks shown here
There are instructions on the QVC site, as well as on the tip card. Pretty makeup, pretty looks!

There are two arm photos, taken in full sun, below left. Three of the shadows are shown; they are the ones I thought might not work for me: Heather Lilac Metallic Eye Shadow, Heather Eye Shadow, and Black Plum Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow - top to bottom - all perfectly wearable! I should have known Bobbi Brown wouldn't use colors that would make me look like an albino bunny.

The Popsicle Sheer Color Gloss is shown below right. It's sheer and pretty in pure pink! When it was available at Bobbi Brown counters, it flew out. Glad I got one!

As far as I know, this collection is exclusive to QVC. Check out this QVC link to see it. It's especially pretty, and the price is amazing. I'm not a big QVC shopper, but I make exceptions for makeup this good!

Bobbi Brown Hydrating Skincare - A Drink of Water for Thirsty Skin

Great makeup starts with great skin! One of the factors that helps our skin look its best is hydration. Bobbi Brown's revamped Hydrating Skincare line, set to arrive in stores soon, promises to give you instant, visible results when you look in the mirror.

Bobbi Brown has improved her popular Hydrating Skincare with the latest technology proven to work wonders on our skin. All the basic formulas of Hydrating Skincare are similar to the existing products, but Bobbi added an enriched mineral water blend. Basically, she replaced the ordinary water in the products with water from a spring in Utah, which was discovered to contain high concentrations of minerals.

Within the line, there are different formulas. Every woman's skin is a bit different - even from day to day. The condition of your skin should dictate the formula(s) you need - from gels for summer to intense creams when your skin is extremely dry.

Perhaps the best part of the Hydrating Skincare line is that it smells clean, makes your skin look prettier immediately, and looks good on your shelf too. Drink it in!

Bobbi Brown thinks most of us can and should drink more water. Here's her advice for making that easy.
    • Carry around a measured bottle filled with water to track your consumption each day.
    • Drink water with a straw (I don't get this one - I drink more unimpeded)
    • Add a little bit of unsweetened fruit juice, sliced lemon - even cucumbers - to your water to make it more tasty.
There are five attractively priced products featured in the Hydrating Skincare line.
    • Hydrating Face Tonic
    • Hydrating Face Cream
    • Hydrating Gel Cream
    • Hydrating Eye Cream
    • Hydrating Intense Night Cream
Hydrating Skincare works in three ways. It hydrates, balances, and revives. The ingredients in the line are designed to replace exactly what dehydrated skin has lost. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin, as well as ingredients that protect our skin's barrier, provide long-term hydration. A natural humectant helps maintain water levels for a healthy complexion. Each product in the line contains unique natural ingredients, as well as collagen builders, to restore the youthful feel and condition of our skin.

Some of the ingredients in the enriched mineral water blend?
    • Zinc to help remove damaged tissue
    • Calcium to help maintain the natural moisture and barrier functions of the upper epidermis and stimulate the skin to make new cells
    • Copper, which is necessary for the production of collagen and elastin, the structural components of healthy skin
    • Iron to help carry oxygen in the body and aid in immune function and energy metabolism
    • Magnesium, essential for healthy skin and ideal for topical use - it aids in cellular renewal, protein formation, DNA production - it even discourages skin irritations
    • Potassium to help with the growth of new skin cells
Along with the hydrating mineral water, what else is in Bobbi's Hydrating Skincare products?

Hydrating Face Tonic includes sodium hyaluronate (a moisture magnet), a lipid blend, cucumber, chamomile, licorice, aloe leaf, and lavender, along with vitamin B5 to soften and condition skin for your next treatment step. Hydrating Face Cream contains algae extract to moisturize and condition, vitamin E (antioxidant), and caffeine. Hydrating Gel Cream has an Asian grass extract to instantly hydrate and increase the skin's natural ability to retain moisture, along with vitamin E. Hydrating Eye Cream (also good for dry lips) is loaded with good stuff: aloe vera, witch hazel extract, jojoba seed oil, avocado oil, squalane, and vitamin E. Hydrating Intense Night Cream counts among its ingredients white birch extract; shea butter; jojoba, olive, sweet almond, and apricot oils; a protein activator; rice bran extract and apple extract; green tea; and vitamin E. It's packed with ingredients to promote healthy skin function and moisturize and condition.

If you want more information about Bobbi's Hydrating Skincare line, stop by a Bobbi Brown counter this fall. Don't let winter set in without preparing your skin for its ravages.
