Carillon pour un Ange Eau de Parfum Rich ($75), a new fragrance available at LuckyScent, caught my eye the moment I saw "lily of the valley." I couldn't resist. My own Carillon pour un Ange (Carillon for an Angel, or Bells for an Angel) arrived last week. I have been wearing it every day. Before I give you my own impressions, let me share the description from its creator, Andy Tauer.
Smelling lily of the valley is always a joy for me. I love the idea that you cannot buy a natural concentrate of lily of the valley, that the flowers resist to any large-scale concentration of their fragrant soul. Perfumers may try to come close to the natural fragrance, but you can never quite get there. Thus, you have to wait through long winter months until you can finally smell their green, silvery, opulent, and elegant exquisite natural perfume. Building a fragrance with lily of the valley singing in spring was a wish since I started making perfumes. Carillon pour un ange is my tribute to this wonderful forest treasure. It is a green choir of flowers. Enjoy!”
With notes of rose, ylang ylang, lilac, lily of the valley, jasmine, leather, ambergris, moss, and woods, Carillon pour un Ange is unlike any other lily of the valley fragrance I own. It is rated on LuckyScent's scale as being a hybrid between feminine and unisex. It's definitely not cloying or sweet. Instead, it strikes me as a modern lily of the valley that expresses its wooded surroundings through its fleeting floral fragrance.
To my nose, the fragrance is a green floral with an edge - the edge being the leather, moss, and wood notes. While they are subtle, they prevent the fragrance from being a clone of other lily of the valley scents. The initial floral burst is followed by a rich, but soft blend that should please lovers of floral and green fragrances, while offering something for others as it dries down.
This is not Diorissimo! It's a more modern and totally unique interpretation of lily of the valley. I like it, even though lily of the valley doesn't dominate. Something about it reminds me of sitting in a leather easy chair, relaxing with a bouquet of flowers, stems, and branches nearby.
Carillon pour un Ange is handmade in Switzerland. The packaging is unique. The box holding the precious cargo is wrapped like a gift in white paper with all the eau de parfum's information. Once the ribbon and wrapping are removed, the plain white box holds the rather small spray bottle (15 ml). I found the presentation rather classy.
You can purchase Carillon pour un Ange at LuckyScent, where you can also purchase a sample for $4 to see what you think of this unique fragrance.

Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules
Beauty rules at Bobbi Brown, with a new limited-edition Beauty Rules Palette ($45) and Beauty Rules ($24.95), Bobbi's sixth book - this one an updated, fresh, energetic beauty bible for young women. When I first saw the new book at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, my lovable Bobbi Brown reps said, "Beauty Rules was not written for you. Think teens and twenties."
Emphasizing natural beauty in the book, Bobbi shares the best tips and tools for fresh, healthy skin and beautiful hair, makeup, and nails. Bobbi Brown's goal is to help women - all women - look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident. True to this philosophy, Beauty Rules was written to help young women learn the beauty basics, then get creative and experiment with their look, and ultimately find their own style.
The book isn't just about makeup. Beauty Rules covers everything from good eating habits to self-esteem. Bobbi used "real girls," not professional models for the photo shoots, just like she did in her Pretty Powerful campaign. She wanted to teach young women to appreciate their own unique beauty.
Fortunately for us women of a certain age, despite the fact that the Beauty Rules Palette is geared toward teenage beauty, it's perfect for women of all ages! The palette's box is designed like a school notebook, with lines for the owner's name - cute. What's inside the notebook palette are some fabulous everyday colors.
Ivory Eye Shadow Lightning Sparkle Eye Shadow Orchid Sparkle Eye Shadow Eclipse Eye Shadow Baby Pink Pot Rouge Homecoming Pink Pot Rouge Air Kiss Lip Gloss Rum Lip Gloss Crystal Gold Glitter Lip Balm Jet Creamy Eye Pencil
Most of these shades are new, which meant I had to have the palette!
Even though it was "fixin' to rain" (I chuckle every time my West Virginia friends use that expression), I was able to get some half-way decent photos of the palette colors on my arm. Naturally, I couldn't photograph the Ivory Eye Shadow. I didn't even try. It's the perfect base shade for your eye look if your skin is fair, and a great highlighting color if your skin is dark. Many of the other shades are sheer and natural. You will barely see some of them on my arm photos.
In the photo at left, top to bottom, are Lightning Sparkle Eye Shadow, a very sheer and shimmering shadow that's barely visible under my wrist; Orchid Sparkle Eye Shadow, also sheer, but with a little more pigment; Eclipse Eye Shadow for your smoky eye; and Jet Creamy Eye Pencil.
In the photo at right are the two pot rouge shades for lips and eyes. Both are pink; the only difference is that one is warmer than the other. I will enjoy both.
The photo below left shows the three lip colors. From top to bottom, Air Kiss Lip Gloss, Rum Lip Gloss, and the sheer Crystal Gold Glitter Lip Balm. Gorgeous!
This palette is perfect for your daughter, but it will also be perfect for women of any age who want sheer, natural colors with touches of shimmer or pizazz. I think I'm going to enjoy it! All the shades work together, and they can be applied with the fingers (teen beauty is supposed to be simple!).
Beauty Rules - the book and the palette, is available at Nordstorm, Neiman Marcus, and, I'm sure, all the Bobbi Brown counters. The Bobbi Brown counters are ready to show young women how to use the palette for a look that they will love: gloss, sparkle, and clean colors!

Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain
Let's celebrate Tarte with Tarte! The company has reached a milestone: 10 years of beautiful, skin-friendly, earth-friendly, and animal-friendly products filled with Tarte's "skinvigorating" ingredients. Effective, affordable, whimsical - cosmetics with a conscience - those are terms to come to my mind when I think about founder Maureen Kelly and her groundbreaking creations.
In June, I showed you Tarte's 10-Year Anniversary blockbusters, which were only available at Sephora at the time. I purchased them and hope you did too. TEN Natural Cheek Stain ($30) and the TEN Limited Edition Collector's Palette ($44 and exclusive to Sephora) are must-haves. You can see a swatch of TEN at this BTiB link.
Today, let's take a look at Tarte's revolutionary new LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain ($24). LipSurgence is the only lip stain that has ever felt creamy after I applied it...hours after I applied it! My lips have to feel moist, or I am an unhappy gal. I have converted countless friends to my lip moisturizing favorites. Dear friends, get ready to try LipSurgence! It has to be the current gold standard for lip stains.
Just like the original and best-selling Tarte natural lip stains, LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain glides on smoothly for a rich matte finish that will stay all day. Each of the matte shades boasts a high pigment concentration, but unlike drying long-wear lipsticks, Tarte's LipSurgence stains are infused with high-performance, natural technology, clinically proven to increase moisture content by an astonishing 6,000% after 28 days of use. Since "matte" is in, this new matte LipSurgence has entered the market at just the right time.
Earth-engineered from a proprietary blend of plant bionutrients, LipSurgence quickly absorbs into the skin, delivering a surge of moisture. Boosting peptides stimulate the skin’s own regenerative system and assist in the formation of collagen. Tarte's proprietary blend increases the lip's water content for a plumped-up appearance. The result? Naturally full, healthy, creamy lips without any irritation or stinging.
Although I haven't used LipSurgence for 28 straight days (I switch it up too often), I can tell you that it's the only lip stain that I have ever used that felt creamy on application and stayed creamy - even through meals (how rare is that?). Some lips stains beg for an immediate topcoat of gloss, and a few newer ones even come with a clear gloss to satisfy my craving for gooey lips. Tarte's LipSurgence doesn't need the gloss to feel good. Naturally, you can use one over LipSurgence if you like the shiny look. You can be certain that your LipSurgence will still be there hours after your gloss wears off.
LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain is available in six shades.
The first thing you notice about LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain is the softness of the thick pencil form. I think that's a clue to its properties on the lips. It contains vitamins A and E, which are anti-inflammatory emollients that protect against free radical damage; carnauba wax to ensure a smooth application; coconut extract that has known microbial and moisturizing properties; and peppermint oil to cool and soothe inflamed or irritated skin while freshening breath. Fortunately, the stain doesn't smell or taste like peppermint on my lips. I don't really want my lips to taste like Altoids!
I'm sure you know that Tarte's wonderful cosmetics are formulated without the following ingredients we are all trying to avoid - and they are cruelty-free.I love that about Tarte! That's why I keep buying. There's little I can resist (seriously, you should see my collection of Cheek Stains, and I need another limited-edition TEN!). Tarte is bookmarked on my computer!
When you visit the Tarte Web site, you should check out Tarte Tokens, a new loyalty program to reward you for shopping. Not only does Tarte give back to its customers, the company gives back to Mother Earth. With the purchase of every Tarte product that incorporates the t5 super fruit complex, customers help preserve the Amazon Rainforest through forest conservation, improved living conditions, and educational opportunities for communities in Brazil. Tarte's supporting the Sustainable Amazon Partnership (SAP), a public and private collaboration to promote lasting sustainable management of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest, making contributions to SAP throughout the year. Some may think of beauty as frivolous; I think of it as an investment in our future when I shop with companies dedicated to the environment.
You can find Tarte's new LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain at Tarte's own Web site (the photos are there, and stock will arrive any day) and Sephora. It has my stamp of approval - check it out. While you're there, make sure to see the original LipSurgence Natural Lip Stains. You'll love them too.
I'll continue to tell you about Tarte's terrific 10-year anniversary products in the coming days. A little bubbly, please. Let's raise our glasses in a toast to Maureen and the Tarte Team. Here's to the next 10 years!

Sofia Vergara's Look for the Emmy Awards
Haven't you ever wanted to style a celebrity for an awards show? Admit it! We all weigh in during and after the shows, selecting our favorites and tsk-tsking those whose stylists failed them. This year, Suave Professionals is giving all of us an opportunity to style Sofia Vergara's hair - well, select her hair style for the red carpet. What fun!
Suave Professionals Stylist Jenny Cho created three glamorous hair styles for Sofia Vergara, star of ABC's comedy Modern Family. Sofia is one of the hottest actresses in the country, and a look at her on Suave's Facebook page will show you why. What a beauty!
I found this fun site while I was looking for my fairy godmother. Remember how much I love the Suave Professionals Weather Protection 365 products that showed up at my doorstep? That search led me to this fun Facebook site.
Suave has three photos on Sofia's page: Modern Sleek, Glamorous Waves, and Sexy Updo. You can vote for your favorite look. You can also roll your mouse over all three looks and watch videos to find out how Jenny Cho created them. All of Sofia's looks were created using Suave Professionals products.
Vote for your favorite by clicking on "Like." Then watch the Emmy Awards show on August 29 to see which style made it onto the red carpet. There's something in it for you too! Make sure to enter every day for a chance to win one of 10 celebrity swag bags. Additionally, one lucky winner will be flown to Los Angeles for an awards show and styled by Jenny, with all kinds of goodies worth approximately $4,500 thrown in (transportation, hotel, and more). See this link for the official rules.
Am I showing you all three looks? Nope! You'll have to go to Facebook to see the third, and I'm not sharing my choice - until after the show (although you could - just use the comments). I did enter the contest. Who wouldn't after trying Suave Professionals hair products?

Purple Lab Pearlesque Show Primer For Perfect Looking Skin
Are you 'primed' for perfect-looking skin?
Well, you can get there with the right makeup primer, ladies. And Purple Lab has a true beauty called, Pearlesque Show ($30), an amazing silicone-free primer blended with pearl powder, kiwi, and honey. Those, along with plumping peptides, and other intelligent ingredients, allow makeup to smoothly glide across the skin, creating an evenly toned complexion.
The beauty of a primer is its perfection at filling in fine lines and pores for a flawless finish BEFORE foundation application. Some women like to wear primer alone, and skip the foundation. But most primer fans love to create as smooth a complexion as they can, so that the next layer, that of foundation, glides over easily.
In other words, think of these steps, as building a house. Layer upon layer. Only in this case, you end up with an almost 'air-brushed' face. The primer allows your makeup staying power. Oily faces stay fresher longer. And if your primer doesn't contain 'built-in' dewy softeners for dry skin, then apply moisturizer before you prime.
Purple Lab Pearlesque Show Primer contains aloe and is friendly to all skin types. According to the company, ..." the formula is decadently rich and ultra moisturizing, giving you firm, even, toned skin.". We like the sound of that.
Primers seem to cost more than regular foundation makeup. At least starting in the $20 range. So, think of a primer as a good beauty investment. And Purple Lab has come up with a very good one, so we say it's a keeper.
For more information, check out Purple Lab NYC.
Chantecaille Bengali Bronzer
Isn't this gorgeous? Chantecaille's Bengali Bronzer ($85) is the prettiest bronzer I own! Who could resist that face?
This slightly iridescent/shimmering bronzer brushes on to deliver a beautiful, natural, sun-kissed glow. Packed with specially coated pearls for a flawless, luminous finish, this special-edition bronze compact is etched with an image of the Royal Bengal Tiger. The two-level rose gold compact houses a mirror and natural-bristle brush.
The shade is absolutely perfect to add a glow to women with light or medium skin. Because my skin is fair, I can't tell you how it will appear on darker skin (might be a highlighter on very dark skin). The shade is very sheer. Here is a photo taken in filtered sun with an arrow pointing toward the heaviest concentration of the bronzer on my arm. You can see bare skin on the section of my arm below the bronzer application.
Like the new Tiger in the Wild Palette, a portion of the proceeds from sales of Bengali Bronzer benefit TRAFFIC, an international wildlife trade monitoring organization trying to save the last tigers in the wild. Since 1998, the last Year of the Tiger, the population of tigers in the wild has diminished from 5,000 to 3,200. The disappearance of wild tigers has become a crisis. The loss of our top predators is the barometer of an ecosystem in trouble - a worldwide concern, which needs attention and focus.
If there was ever a time to spend money on makeup, this is it! You could own this gorgeous palette and support one of the world's most urgent efforts to protect wildlife and biodiversity. As if that weren't enough, I'm trying to show you the many fabulous products you can purchase to qualify for a very special current offer at Chantecaille. Right now, if you spend $225 at the Web site, you will receive a free White Tiger Poudre Délicate. Check out the link. I got mine!

Giorgio Armani Beauty Crema Nera OMC3 Giveaway Contest
Thanks to Loyd Cassler, I have one Giorgio Armani Beauty Crema Nera OMC3 Obsidian Mineral Restoring Cream to give away! This Crema Nera has an SPF of 15 (protecting against both UVA and UVB rays), so it's basically a day cream - lightweight in feel, but with heavy-duty effectiveness. It's priced at $185. Isn't the Armani Beauty Team at Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase, Maryland, generous?
The targeted anti-aging OMC3 treatment is designed to restructure, replenish, and re-plump the skin for women (and men) concerned with wrinkles, firmness, and sagging. It's perfect, though, for women of all ages. Its active ingredients are the OMC3 complex, a combination of perlite solute, iron, and silicium - the latter two being anti-aging, cell-regenerating minerals; pro-xylane, which stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans, important to the function of connective tissue; and hyaluronic acid (a must-use topical hydrator). I won't bore you with the biology lesson. This is "good stuff" for the skin!
Crema Nera OMC3 is said to add density, firmness, and structure to the skin by working at three levels: the epidermis, dermo-epidermal junction, and the dermis. Basically, the three essential ingredients in OMC3 are believed to repair the skin by acting on different types of collagen, increasing collagen production. The results? In a four-week test, 81% of the participants experienced increased firmness, 73% experienced a decrease in the appearance of wrinkles (imagine pushing them out from the inside), and 73% had improved density.
How can you win this incredible cream? Just leave a comment here once and tell me what your favorite Best Things in Beauty Armani Beauty blog post has been. There are a lot of them because I love my Armani cosmetics and skin care (just use the "Search This Blog" feature on the right sidebar to find all the "Armani" posts).
After you comment, feel free to e-mail bestthingsinbeautycontests@gmail.com and identify your comment. You can never be too careful about sharing your e-mail address on a blog, so I would follow this second step if I were you (an alternative is to code your e-mail, e.g., myname at gmail dot com, in your comment).
You can "earn" a second entry by tweeting this contest. Just make sure to include "@BTiBeauty" (without the quotes) in your tweet. I will tweet the contest soon, and you can simply retweet it to earn that second entry.
The deadline for entries will be Saturday, August 28, at midnight. The next morning, I will use a random number generator (random.org) to select the winner. I will e-mail the winner at that time. The winner will have 48 hours to reply to my message and provide a shipping address. After 48 hours, the prize will be forfeited, and another winner will be selected. It's hard for me to believe, but I have had two no-show winners in the last few months.
We are going to try something different. This contest is open to anyone anywhere. Here are the terms. I will carefully pack and ship the prize (as I always do). I cannot insure it - it's amazingly expensive to do so. If it leaves the U.S. and it's lost or stolen, I won't be able to replace it with another OMC3. We'll try this once and see how it works. I know some of you suggested that I charge for postage, but I wouldn't feel right about doing that. I'll do my best on this end; let's see if your mail services do right by you on the other end if we have an overseas winner.
Good Luck!
My thanks, once again, to the uber-generous Armani Beauty team at Saks! They take such good care of us.

Bobbi Brown Tips from the Master Class at Nordstrom Tysons Corner Center
What fun we had yesterday at the Bobbi Brown Master Class at Nordstrom at Tysons Corner! About 21 of us spent almost three hours with Tia Hebron, Bobbi's Global Makeup Team Artist and Education Executive (and total dynamo); Michele Shakeshaft, Bobbi's fabulous Market Coordinator for our region; and 10 makeup artists whose sole mission was to make us look beautiful - and learn how to do it ourselves.
I have three pages of notes! They covered a lot of ground, and I can't give you the whole class in one blog feature. I can tell you about the tips I found most helpful and the products Tia used on me. I also have a few photos, despite the challenge of the lighting in the room (with flash, they washed out; without, they were a bit dark). Unfortunately, my photo of Tia and Michele is dark. There's another photo of Tia below.
Tia led us from skin care to the finishing touches - with humor, talent, and energy. Somehow, "the blogger" got tapped to be the model, so I sat under the lights on the little stage as Michele and Tia demonstrated what they taught us. From my vantage point, I watched each woman in the class as she was transformed from pretty to pretty powerful. It was a blast!
We learned all about Bobbi's skin care, starting by cleansing our faces, and we got a nice introduction to the newest Hydrating Skincare products. Tia called Hydrating Face Tonic "Gatorade for the skin," a great description for the toner/tonic that is loaded with minerals and vitamins to enhance your skin before you use the treatment products best for you.
Tia focused on two great serum choices for use under our moisturizer: Intensive Skin Supplement (my choice for my aging and dry skin) and Brightening Intensive Serum, a serum that won't bleach your skin as it clarifies and brightens. We applied our serum and followed up with a moisturizer. Michele selected the new Hydrating Face Cream for me. We learned that all of Bobbi Brown's moisturizers have built-in primers so that your face will be ready for your makeup application after you moisturize.
Because your makeup can't look its best without good skin underneath, we continued to apply our skin care, using products to protect our eyes and lips. Extra Eye Repair Cream is the staff favorite in Bobbi's New York headquarters. Tia called it "Spanx in a jar," and apparently they can't keep it in stock in the closet. We also learned that Bobbi's Lip Balm SPF 25, which feels great on my always-parched lips, will bring out the color in your lips.
Tia used the phrase "runway to reality" to describe how Bobbi Brown translates runway color trends into makeup we can use every day. She started with foundation, as the artists applied three shades to our faces to see which one would disappear into our skin. You want your foundation to look natural, so selecting the right foundation shade and applying it correctly will get you off to the right start. She also mentioned that you should only apply foundation to the areas of your face that need it. That's often in the center of your face, and you should blend it out to "nothing" where your skin is clear and even. She also taught us how to use Bobbi's top-rated Corrector to take away any darkness under our eyes follow with the Creamy Concealer Kit, making sure to use concealer in the inner corner near the nose and set the concealer with powder.
Everyone needs to use bronzer! I didn't believe that until I saw the transformation of 21 women who lightly applied either the Bronzing Powder or the All Over Bronzing Gel SPF 15.
Tia used Desert Sun gel on me (and the lovely lady to the left), and I loved the warm look. None of looked tan; we just looked sculpted and healthy!
Bobbi recommends an order to makeup application: cheeks, lips, then eyes. If you run out of time during your makeup application, you can quit after any step. Your cheeks and lips will add radiance to your face. Tia was a hoot when she told us that people are nicer to you when you're wearing blusher. She suggested that if you apply the bronzer first, you simply need to add a pop of color to the apple of your cheeks to be ready to roll. With Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, powder blushes, and Sheer Color Cheek Tint, Bobbi has us covered with formulas and shades! Tia surprised me when she selected Sheer Coral Sheer Color Cheek Tint for me. That may be the only shade I haven't bought! Naturally, Tia showed everyone techniques for applying color, and she recommended Bobbi's brushes - the right brush for each task - as we progressed through the class.
We moved from cheeks to lips. You probably know that Bobbi Brown recommends using your lip color before your lip liner. When you do use your pencil liner, use the flat edge of the pencil and feather it on to define and enhance your lips. Tia used Black Cherry Creamy Lip Color and Black Chocolate Sheer Color Gloss on my lips. She used Brownie Lip Liner to finish the look. (You can see my selections from the Black Velvet Collection (last week's shopping foray) at this link. Glad I bought Black Cherry and Black Chocolate!)
We did our eyes last! Naturally, I wanted to play with the new Black Velvet Collection, so Tia applied a neutral ivory color all over my lid before she started her magic. She used Khaki Eye Shadow on my lower lid before she applied the new Black Charcoal Metallic Eye Shadow. She told us that there has been a shift in how to create the smoky eye. No longer do you paint one color on your lower lid and another in the crease. Now, the best way is to apply the darkest color at the last line and blend as you move up into the crease. Don't be afraid to use your finger to help blend if you need to. Tia blended the Black Charcoal over the Khaki and followed with the new Kohl Eye Liner in Black and Extreme Party Mascara. She also used gray shadow to fill in my brows and the Highlighter Pen in Opal at the top of my cheekbones.
Here I am modeling the look Tia created with Bobbi's new book, Beauty Rules. There's a Beauty Rules Palette too! I'll tell you about Beauty Rules later this week. I took a closeup photo of the eye look Tia created when I got home. I had to take the photo inside using a flash, so it's very shiny - sorry about that. I should have left it on for the party I attended last night! It was pretty snazzy.
If you get a chance to attend a Bobbi Brown Master Class, you should do it! You'll learn a lot and have fun while you're learning. My thanks for Tia, Michele, the 10 artists, the sweet gals who let me take their photos (including that gorgeous mother-daughter team above), and Diron Carr, the Nordstrom Tysons Bobbi Brown manager who told me I had to attend. He was right.

Givenchy Taps Timberlake To Front New 'Play For Her' Fragrance
RWD Play FFWD for Her. That's the name of Givenchy's new scent for women. And it appears at fine fragrance counters starting in October, at $48 a bottle. It's classified as an Oriental floral.
And what's Justin Timberlake got to do with it all?
Givenchy has tapped the singer to bring sexy back and help burn up big sales for this new scent, along with lovely 'New Moon's' Noot Seear.
It also doesn't hurt that Justin Timberlake was already the Face of Givenchy's 'Play for Him' fragrance. And that was hugely successful, so the clever folks at Givenchy decided to continue with the 'playful' theme. And it's a great print ad that features Justin and Noot linked with a set of headphones tucked discreetly into Timberlake’s pocket, before Paris, the City of Lights atop atop the Eiffel Tower.
Like the 'Play for Him male scent, the Givenchy 'Play for Her' fragrance, will be tucked into a bottle that echoes a digital music player. Very nice.
By the way, there will be two versions, because women like to have a choice: The Eau de Parfum (which comes in the light pink bottle with notes of bergamot and white peach) and the Eau de parfum Intense (which has a deeper violet bottle with a succulent blending of orange blossom, pink peppercorns, and sandalwood).

Weekend Ramblings
I have a lot to write this week, and I'll get started on it later today. Here's what's strolling through my mind at 7:00 am Sunday.
- Yesterday's Bobbi Brown Master Class at Nordstrom was a blast. I will write up a story on it later today.
- Last night, I attended a murder mystery party based on Clue. I played Mrs. Peacock (the murderer). The "real quote" below describes my general state of cluelessness about Clue. What makeup was Mrs. Peacock wearing? Chantecaille Tiger in the Wild! It was the first time I left the house wearing the indigo shade as eyeliner. I loved it!
- Mrs. Peacock: Well, someone's got to break the ice, and it might as well be me. I mean, I'm used to being a hostess, it's part of my husband's work. And it's always difficult when a group of new friends meet together for the first time, to get acquainted. So I'm perfectly prepared to start the ball rolling. I mean, I-I have absolutely no idea what we're doing here. Or what I'm doing here, or what this place is about, but I am determined to enjoy myself. And I'm very intrigued, and, oh my, this soup's delicious, isn't it?
- We still don't have a definitive answer to "smokey" vs. "smoky," but my research is pointing toward an industry preference for "smoky" - not the fan favorite "smokey." We haven't tackled "grey" vs "gray" yet. Sounds like a courtroom drama!
- The new Allure arrived yesterday - on my doorstep, which means a kind neighbor delivered it after it was left at the incorrect house. Why can't the Postal Service deliver mail reliably?
- Also, why can't the Postal Service bring my fall Sephora catalog? Have you received yours? I wonder who has mine!
- I was smitten this weekend with a gorgeous pair of earrings. I'm sure they had my name on them. The delicate diamonds framing blue tourmalines left me with the I-wants. They were only one of the many things I coveted at the International Gem and Jewelry Show. I really need to win the lottery.
- Yesterday, while at Nordstrom, I saw a woman in a racerback tank top with a racerback bra under it. Apparently she gave no thought to the visibility of most of the bra (not just the straps). I wonder if her mirror broke. It wasn't a pretty, lacy, bra - the kind you might mistake for today's streetwear. It was a utilitarian bra. She was old enough to know better and young enough to care. Amazing! Would you go shopping like that?

Bethenny Frankel Has Favorite Leg Cream By Sponge SkinCare
New mom Bethenny Frankel is giving out more beauty tips, following her rapid return to skinny girl status.
As we all know, the 39-year-old mom to baby Bryn took a lot of heat for dropping an amazing 30 lbs. in just 3 weeks following her C-section on May 8th. And then to really top it all off, Bethenny showed off her great body at age 39, in photos for Us Weekly, wearing a size 4 bathing suit. It seemed like an impossible feat, at least for most new moms in Bethenny's position. Some women got jealous and others wanted to know the reality television star's post baby diet and exercise tips.
And now the new mom tells People magazine that there is one must-have beauty product she can't be without----Jambes Lourdes Anti-Fatigue Leg Cream by Sponge Skincare ($95, at Sponge Skincare.
Bethenny Frankel likes this cream a lot because, "It's made for people like me, who are always on their feet." And we believe her. She is constantly running around with her businesses, like the Skinny Girl line of drinks, her reality TV show, taking care of Bryn, and exercising her fanny off.
So, what's in the Sponge Skincare cream?
The formula is full of calming herbs to revitalize tired, restless legs. And the company, based in Greece, says, "The nourishing cream was designed to diminish discomfort in the legs caused by travel, poor circulation or prolonged periods of standing. It features mastic, a rare herb that heals and rejuvenates, as well as calming calendula and sage. Originally developed by an OB/GYN, it offers complete safety and gentleness, making it suitable for use by all skin types. Tired muscles are relieved and vascular circulation is improved, leaving the legs comfortable and calm."
A bit pricey at $95 for 3.4 oz., but if this cream can really soothe aching, tired legs, well, we think it's a good investment....that, or a really long nap.
Weekend Roundup - August 21
Beauty companies are dazzling us with new makeup introductions, effective skin care, fabulous fragrances, and new shades for our nails - all kinds of temptations to spend money to be gorgeous! Check out the must-haves that made us swoon this week. I'm swooning not only over the gorgeous fall and winter collections, but also the amount of money I've spent! By that measure, it has been one of the biggest fall seasons ever!
Chanel can make your heart race. Kari's pulse quickened when she saw the Inimitable Intense display of new Chanel eye shadows and mascaras. You should visit Fab over Forty before you leave home. A trip to the Chanel counter may be in your future. The last time I stopped by my favorite Chanel counter, they had the mascaras, but not those gorgeous eye shadows. I have to find them - today!
Gaia used the term "perfect" to describe Edward Bess Forever Yours Ultra Sleek Lipstick. If you want to see how "perfect" looks, head over to The Non-Blonde. Of the 13 shades available, she was able to limit herself to just four. Such willpower! It's also noteworthy that she found a jasmine she likes! This jasmine lover was impressed. Then, almost like it was "meant to be," a sample of the jasmine that sneaked into Gaia's house arrived at mine yesterday.
Sabrina at The Beauty Look Book is another Edward Bess fan. You'll want to see her complete review, along with lots of great photos, of his Compact Rouge. Most of us have to go out of our way to order Edward Bess from New York, but it's worth the extra effort.
Kelly has a new lip addiction. Tom Pecheux is shaking up Estée Lauder. He rocked Kelly with the new Pure Color Gloss (rocked my world with the eye shadows). Kelly modeled her lovely shade selections at Gouldylox Reviews. She even "tolerates" the fig scent, as I do.
I'm already in the holiday spirit, thanks to Shiseido! The Makeup 2010 Holiday Collection Essential Elegance Palette, created by Dick Page, left me gushing here at Best Things in Beauty. Just click or scroll down if you want to see why. As if I didn't have enough must-have brands, Dick Page has added Shiseido to my list. I'll probably be out purchasing/shipping this palette for you gals who can't buy it where you live! I think I've found my calling: personal makeup shopper.
At BeautyXposé, it was all about REN Replenishing Treatment Mists (and darling flats for fall). Find out why Pamela has been obsessed, spritzing with glee. I love mists, so I'm with Pamela!
Let's not forget our hands! Laurie at Product Girl gave us a peek at Essie’s Fall 2010 collection, nail colors to complement the season’s fashion trends. Laurie has exquisite taste. While you are at Product Girl, check out Les Khakis de Chanel too. The collection is being introduced to celebrate Fashion Night Out during New York Fashion Week.
While we're on the subject of hands, Marcia and Lisa featured an interview with Ellen Sirot, a world-famous hand model! If you visit Beauty Info Zone Blog, you'll find a special discount on Ellen's Hand Perfection products to keep your hands in tip-top shape.
To end our tour on an upbeat, jazzy note, head over to Makeup Artist Backstage and watch the short video on Washington's style setters ("housewives" and party crashers aren't DC's only claim to fame). Victoria worked to beautify this year's shoot. I loved the video, living proof that DC folks aren't all a bunch of policy dweebs.
You'll want to drop in on our beauty blogger friends every day over the next few weeks. The beauty world is hopping! Got to keep up!

Classic Pointy Toe Kitten Heels Cat's Meow For Fall 2010
Pointy toe kitten heels. Okay, some of you absolutely adore these classic, ladylike shoes. But there are others who find the kitten heel to be a bit dowdy or too low to the ground.
Well, you better start seeing things from a different angle, ladies, because the pointy toe kitten heel was the cat's meow all over the runways for fall 2010. Yes, the lower, more sensible heel is in! Think Audrey Hepburn...she pulled the look off so beautifully.
Don't worry. You can still wear your favorite sky-high heels. Those Manolo Blahniks and Louboutins aren't fading away into fashion obscurity just yet. But it is a nice change, to see the 1950's pointy toe kitten heel re-emerge as one of the top fashion trends for fall 2010.
Designer Marc Jacobs paraded the delicate low heels throughout his runway shows. Check out these cuties above, by Marc Jacobs.
And Banana Republic, as well as Cole Haan are featuring pointy toe kitten heels in an elegant slingback style.
Stella McCartney also introduced the pointy toe kitten heel as a sexy slingback in her fall 2010 collection. And designer Rachel Roy told Harper's Bazaar magazine, that she's crazy about the kitten heel:
"I think they are the chicest way to go," Rachel Roy explains. "But they must be worn the right way or they skew old. I can't say enough great things about them. I could go on for days." She pairs them with a wrinkled khaki trench and a cuffed short or tight, sexy cocktail dresses. "I like the awkwardness the pointy kitten heel brings to sexy looks," she adds. By the way, Rachel Roy stands 5 foot 11 in her bare feet. So, yeah, the kitten heel is kinder to tall women.
And that brings us to this observation........Pointy toe kitten heels cannot lift your butt or enhance some killer calves, or instantly grow and slenderize you some 5 inches taller like stilettos can.
Meow!
The Friday Forum - August 20
Hosta Plantaginea, "Royal Standard," a fragrant hosta I planted next to my porch many years ago, is divine. I sit on the screened-in porch in August and inhale the sweet, floral scent. Someone should package it! I love having white flowers in my garden this time of year. They are so cooling and look fabulous at dusk when they light up the garden.
Enough about the garden - let's turn to beauty. For those of you who are new to The Friday Forum, the purpose has always been to share information. Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Tell us about it! Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Tell us why! Do you have questions others might be able to answer? We can help! Want to talk about skin care? I'm game! Just want to chat? Use the comments. Don't be shy! We have busy weekends and slow ones on the forum. Some are "really slow." No matter, I'm happy if even one reader stops by.
This week, I had a major blogger dilemma over the spelling of the "smokey eye." Using the "e" in "smokey" seems like a natural to me, but some in the industry use "smoky" in their product names and descriptions. That sounds like "smocky" to me. You guessed it: I'm a Virgo. We get obsessed over little details (and we are horribly embarrassed every time we forget to spell check our features).
I will share the best beauty bits (noteworthy sales and special offers) with you over the weekend. I'll put them in the comments.
Don't forget to enter the giveaway contest for the fabulous Tarte Femme Natural Eye Shadow Palette. The deadline is tomorrow night, August 21, at midnight.
Thanks for reading Best Things in Beauty! Got anything you want to talk about?

Bobbi Brown's Eye Couture Palette - Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman Exclusive
Like jewel tones? Like Bobbi Brown makeup brushes? Check out this incredible Bobbi Brown Eye Couture Palette ($220), a Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman exclusive expected to arrive in stores any day.
I realize it's starting to seem like Bobbi Brown week here at Best Things in Beauty (or Chantecaille week), but there has been so much news to share. I've even held back the Bobbi Brown holiday collection photos. I couldn't hold this news back. I predict that this limited-edition collection is going to sell out, and I want my readers to have first dibs. Get on a waiting list! I'll share contact information with you below.
First, though, I'll describe this palette. Just look at the jewel-toned shades at left in this scanned photo. Deep and luxurious, most of them telegraph fall and winter. You don't just get beautiful eye shadows with the palette; you also get four brushes in a carrying case!
Here is a list of the eye shadow shades.
As if the eye palette weren't enough, it comes with a brush set in a case that includes these brushes - all travel-sized.
If you have a Neiman Marcus or Bergdorf Goodman near you - and you want this set - I'd suggest you get on the waiting list. If you don't have a store nearby, but would like to order the Eye Couture Collection, you can give Rachel Lagman, Bobbi Brown Product Specialist, at Neiman Marcus a call at (202) 966-9700, ext 2265. She will take good care of you.
Sometimes, Bobbi's collections that are exclusive to department stores eventually land on Bobbi's own Web site. This one may too - I don't know. I'm not taking that chance. I'm on the list!

Bobbi Brown Black Velvet Collection - My Selections Swatched
Only 10 days ago, I gave you a preview of Bobbi Brown's new Black Velvet Collection for Fall and Winter 2010. Ladies, it's in the stores, and it's fabulous!
Today, I shopped at lunch with the beautiful Rachel Lagman, Bobbi Brown Product Specialist, at Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie. She helped me select the best shades for my pale skin and blond hair. When I got home, I learned that Nordstrom Tysons Corner also has the collection. That means it's at a store near you. Bobbi has covered all the angles with this collection - there are shades (and looks) for every skin tone and every preference, from everyday color to nighttime drama.
There were two Metallic Lip Colors ($22) on display: Black Garnet and Black Maple. I selected Black Garnet, which is shown at the top of my arm photo to the right. Black Maple is very brown and better suited, I think, to someone with darker skin. There were also two Creamy Lip Colors ($22). My choice between Black Mahogany and Black Cherry was Black Cherry. Black Cherry is shown in the middle of my photo. Then there is a drop-dead gorgeous Sheer Color Gloss ($20) in Black Chocolate that is surprisingly sheer and light on my skin. It looks darker in the tube. I love it! Just "take in" this photo. All three lip colors are gorgeous!
Neiman Marcus did not have all of the new eye shadows in stock yet, but they did have one that caught my eye instantly: Black Cocoa Metallic Eye Shadow ($20). Don't let the name fool you. It's brown - a beautiful brown (and shown at left under clouds and below in sun). To go with it, I selected the brown-toned new Kohl Eye Liner ($20) in Black Chocolate. The Kohl Eye Liner is also available in Black Plum (a dark plum, so trendy for fall and modeled by Rachel today) and Black.
There were three shadows I didn't see today. I'm hoping they will be available at Nordstrom this weekend. I'm going to a Bobbi Brown Master Class at Tysons Corner Center (you can too!), led by Tia Hebron, Bobbi's Global Makeup Team Artist and Education Executive. I suspect I'll purchase more from this extraordinary collection - and possibly hoard Black Garnet Metallic Lip Color.
What do you think?
P.S. I bought one of the new Hydrating Skincare items too. I'll tell you about it later.
Update 8/21: Tea Hebron from Bobbi Brown did my eyes today with the new Black Velvet colors. I'll show you tomorrow. She made me "dramatic"! Very cool.

Project Runway's Nina Garcia Launches Another Book On Style
Nina Garcia is pretty vocal about what she likes and doesn't like when it comes to style. Her words can cut like a knife, and that is why she is such a formidable judge on Bravo's hit show 'Project Runway.' And now the un-shy Nina has spelled it all out in a new book called, 'Nina Garcia's Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion.'
You either love Nina Garcia or you can't stand her. We happen to adore her and her often snobby view of fashion. She's a firecracker and fun to watch, as she gives smart advice and tough love to budding fashion designers on 'Project Runway.'
The Colombian-born beauty has been on the New York Times bestseller list before, so it wouldn't surprise us if she climbs the well-respected chart, once again.
In her new book, 45-year-old Nina Garcia teaches women how to tackle that universal question----What Should I Wear??!!.
For instance, let's say you must appear for jury duty. What exactly is appropriate for the courtroom? Nina lays it all out for the reader. From jacket to blouse to shoes, and jewelry. And the focus is always on timeless classics.
"Believe me--there's pressure when you're deciding what to wear to a meeting with an iconic fashion designer or a member of the press. It can be terrifying. But instead of panicking, I stop, take a deep breath, and remember that I speak "fashion." And by the time you have read this book, you'll be able to speak the language of fashion too, at all the key moments of your life."

What does Miss Nina Garcia know? Plenty, when it comes to style. From what we uncovered, she has the proper fashion background----"she has worked in fashion houses and in fashion media, with everyone from Marc Jacobs to Elle magazine and Marie Claire."
By the way, 'Nina Garcia's Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion' is published by Voice, and is available right now at bookstores everywhere for $23.99. The book makes a great gift, ladies.
And Nina Garcia is also working on another wonderful 'project' in her life. She is pregnant with her second child, due in December. Congratulations to Nina and her husband, David Conrod!
